CASE STUDY

Client: Heathrow Terminal 4

Installation of a goods hoist and jersey barriers

KCS was contracted install a goods hoist and two jersey barriers in the Terminal 4 goods delivery bay.  The scope included the safe and efficient replacement of approximately 200 glass panes and composite panels. We delivered empty stillages and removed the full ones, and removed and recycled all waste in our yard. By integrating advanced equipment - including a telehandler, a counterbalanced forklift and an artic lorry, with skilled personnel and stringent safety protocols, we were able to deliver exceptional service that met and exceeded our client’s expectations.

Overcoming challenges in offloading and distribution of ETVs

We faced numerous challenges during this project which involved the offloading and distribution of six-tonne ETV sections using eight-meter-long standard rollerbeds whilst working under low level containment. The ETVs were offloaded using our own eight-ton forklift and strategically placed for construction. The versatility of our Fassi lorry loader was crucial for continuing all lifting operations. With only 600mm of headroom available, the installation of a 2.3-tonne top beam required precise manoeuvring, and using remote control, our operator had the best possible vantage point, ensuring safe and accurate placement.

Despite the tight conditions and complex logistics, the KCS team successfully managed the challenges of the project, demonstrating our flexibility, ability to adapt to each situation and our capacity to handle challenging tasks with precision and efficiency.

Removal and replacement of HBS scanner from a mezzanine level

Luton Airport engaged KCS to remove a large 3 section hold baggage screening machine with a larger, 4 section scanner. All sections were on a mezzanine level and were lowered/raised on a steel raft, supported from underneath with 2 bespoke lifting beams and lifted from overhead with 4 chain blocks hanging from a purpose-built scaffold. We undertook this intricate operation - which had many stages - using slings and our 8-tonne forklift truck to accommodate heavy loads of up to 5 tonnes. We ensured the essential accuracy required to control the level of the raft at each stage.

Lifting and Placement of Air Purifiers for a New Laboratory

We were asked by the University of Oxford to assist with the lifting and placement of air purifiers for a new laboratory at the university.

The air purifiers were delivered to the site where we offloaded them using a telehandler. All items were on their backs; our challenge was to find a smart solution for uprighting them without causing and damage and working within extremely limited headroom. Our approach was to put a gantry on the roof, and place the lifting tackle into the room below. Once upright, the purifiers were moved using steel plynths and the work was completed within two days.

Replacement of an HBS machine

KCS were engaged to remove an old Hold Baggage Screening machine (HBS) and replace with newer model.

Due to very low ground pressures (4k/n per square metre) the whole route was decked in ply and an exclusion zone was set up to allow the rigging of a mobile crane.  A special 40-wheel low height skate system was created to spread the weight of the 4.2-ton scanner.  Two gantries and temporary steels were also required to position the new HBS machine.  The main challenge was to manoeuvre the specialist equipment with only a 25mm space between the scanner and the doorway.
